In his journey he lost a leg when he got drunk after he was notified of his wife's death. After waking out of a coma, he came home to an emotional return to start building the boat that eventualy served his people for more than forty years until his death in 1973. When his second boat sank about a half-mile from the shores, he and more than fifty people died in shark infested water; not one body washed to shore, though three survived.
