Autorenporträt
Théophile Gautier (1811-1872) veröffentlichte ab 1830 Lyrik und Prosa, darüber hinaus arbeitete er als Kritiker. Der vollendete Stilist und aufgeklärte Romantiker entwickelte sich zum bedeutendsten Theoretiker der Literaturbewegung Le Parnasse. Zu seinen zahlreichen Bewunderern zählten Flaubert und Baudelaire, der ihm Die Blumen des Bösen widmete.

Mit seiner berühmten roten Weste wurde er 1833 zur Symbolfigur der romantischen Bewegung. Er gilt als Begründer des l'art pour l'art, einer Dichtung frei aller Zwecke und Indienstnahmen.
