The precise boundaries of the kingdom, however, are vague. East Anglia was one of the most powerful of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms during the early 7th century, but its power subsequently waned, and over the following centuries it was often subject to the overlordship of Mercia. In 870 it was conquered by the Danes, who settled there in 879. In 917 the kingdom submitted to Edward the Elder of Wessex and was incorporated into the Kingdom of England. The term East Anglia survives as a geographical expression, in which sense it includes Cambridgeshire as well as Norfolk and Suffolk.
