The short dictionary of Chinese Buddhist terms is the result of close collaboration between people from four different countries who came together at the University of Marburg, Germany. The basis of this dictionary consists of a select Chinese vocabulary, including both general terms and proper nouns, relating to Buddhism. Translations of this vocabulary are provided in English and in German. These translations were worked out together by the three members of the editorial team, each of whom has mothertongue competence in one of the three languages. The English and German translations were chosen to correspond as precisely as possible to the Chinese terms and were also, here for the first time to this extent, carefully correlated with each other. The dictionary may therefore be of service in the continuing process of stabilising translations of elementary Buddhist terms in western languages.
