Knowledge, democracy and action: Community-university research partnerships in global perspectives is about the power of academics and community based researchers working together in the co-creation of knowledge for solutions to complex critical issues facing us in our communities around the world. This is the first book on higher education framed within the context of knowledge democracy, a discourse that recognises a diversity of traditions and forms of representation, and the use of knowledge as an organising strategy for social change. Based on a three-year international comparative study undertaken by the Global Alliance on Community Engaged Research, the book draws on the experience and insights of thirty-seven scholars and practitioners from the Global South and North to provide a theoretical overview of knowledge, democracy and action, and analyse what it takes to create and sustain community-university research partnerships. The twenty case studies from around the world illustrate how research partnerships have provided solutions to issues of sustainability, poverty and marginality, and suggest an agenda for future research and policy recommendations. This book will be of interest to lecturers and students in higher education, comparative education, adult and lifelong learning and the sociology of knowledge, as well as policy makers in government and the philanthropic sector.
