The illustrations in Knucklehead Mountain are by Afsaneh (Afy) Bagherloo, who is a talented artist from Milan, Italy. The illustrations are based on pictures taken in the Pisgah Mountains of North Carolina. If you have visited this area, you may recognize areas of Linville Gorge, Wilson Creek, Bennet Gap Trail, Black Mountain Trail, Reasonover Creek, and other locations. The real Kai and Koda live at the foot of the Pisgah Mountains and these are the trails they love to hike. They have proven to themselves, time and again, to be up to some great big adventures!

Afsaneh (Afy) Bagherloo loves to draw and David Funk loves to write. They began working together on children's books in the spring of 2019 based on a shared love for children's books. "We Love to Paint is their second co-authored project together.
