Der amerikanische Literaturnobelpreisträger John Steinbeck (1902 - 1968) wollte dagegen kein eigenes Prosawerk schaffen, ihm ging es vielmehr um eine authentische Übersetzung der mittelalterlichen Geschichte. Seine unmittelbare Quelle war eine Sammlung von Prosaerzählungen, die der Raubritter Sir Thomas Malory zwischen 1451 und 1470 im Gefängnis niederschrieb.
Steinbeck hatte seit seiner Kindheit ein enges persönliches Verhältnis zu diesen Abenteuergeschichten. Kaum ein anderes Buch beeindruckte ihn über Jahre hinweg mehr. So reiste Steinbeck 1958/59 nach England und Italien, um sich ein Bild von den Schauplätzen zu machen und das Quellenmaterial zu erschließen. Er benutzte bedeutende Bibliotheken und legte sich selbst ein ansehnliche Fachbibliothek an.
Mit der fortlaufenden Übertragung kam es jedoch zunehmend zu größeren Abweichungen vom Malory-Original. So ergänzte Steinbeck die Vorlage durch malerische Ausstattung der Schauplätze und ausführliche Landschaftsbeschreibungen. Der Autor selbst spürte, dass immer mehr ein eigener Artus-Roman entstand, was ihn in eine tiefe Krise stürzte („Ich wollte nichts auslassen und nichts hinzufügen“). Obwohl er reumütig zur direkten Malory-Übertragung zurückkehrte, schloss er das Manuskript schließlich unvollendet ab.
Mit seiner Nacherzählung der unsterblichen Saga schuf Steinbeck ein außergewöhnliches Stück Literatur. In einer zeitgemäßen Sprache erzählt er von dem legendären König und den anderen Rittern der Tafelrunde, von ihren Abenteuern und Liebesgeschichten. Seine Malory-Bearbeitung ist daher nicht nur als Beitrag zur Mittelalterforschung sondern zur amerikanischen Literatur des 20. Jahrhunderts zu betrachten.
Im Deutschen Taschenbuch Verlag ist nun Steinbecks Übersetzungsprojekt erschienen, das durch einen umfangreichen Anhang mit Briefen des Autors ergänzt wird. Es sind zunächst begeisterte und dann verzweifelte Dokumente eines Künstlers, der sich schmerzlich eingesteht, an der selbst gestellten Aufgabe gescheitert zu sein.
Steinbecks Artus-Übertragung ist trotzdem ein recht interessantes und lebendiges Werk, das uns die mittelalterliche Welt in einer verständlichen Sprache näher bringt.
