We are not sure how the name Gingee came to be. From the twelfth century to the seventeenth century it was known as Krishnapuram. The reason is that Vaishnavism has been ruled by the Konars, the Kurumbars and the Nayaks. Later the Sultans of Bijapur called Gingee as Badushabad. The Marathas named it Chandi. Krishnappa Nayak was one of the most important Nayaks who ruled Gingee.
