Jean Richepin (1849-1926) est un poète, romancier et auteur dramatique français. Fils d'un médecin militaire originaire de l'Aisne, très tôt Richepin acquiert la réputation de « fort en thème » ce qui lui a permit de faire de brillantes études secondaires et d'intégrer l'École normale supérieure en 1868, avant d'obtenir une licence ès-lettres en 1870. Maniant les mots et les images aussi bien que certains manient les armes, il se fait vite remarquer en s'imposant grâce à ses joutes verbales. D'un caractère enclin à l'emportement d'aucun dirait à la violence, à l'exaltation et à un certain romantisme, Richepin demeure le maître incontestable de son métier poétique fort de sa culture de normalien lettré. Considéré de nos jours que comme un « très grand rhétoricien », certains de ces écrits dressent un portrait au vitriol de la société de son époque dont leurs exactitudes constituent une richesse incommensurable.
