Pasó gran parte de su infancia en una enorme casa antigua que la inspiró a escribir historias extrañas desde muy joven. Fly By Night, su primera novela infantil obtuvo un gran reconocimiento por parte de la crítica y ganó el Premio Branford Boase. Desde entonces ha escrito muchas novelas de éxito para el público infantil y juvenil, entre ellas El árbol de las mentiras, ganadora del Premio Costa 2015 al mejor libro del año She spent much of her childhood in a huge old house which inspired her to write strange stories from a young age. Fly By Night, her first children's novel, received critical acclaim and won the Branford Boase Award. She has since written many successful novels for children and young adults, including The Tree of Lies, winner of the 2015 Costa Book of the Year Award.
