Autorenporträt
Jesús Uriarte was born in San Juan y Martínez, a province of Pinar del Río, Cuba. The son of a grocer and a housewife, he grew up in a middle-class home. He completed his high school education at the Instituto de Pinar del Río and graduated with a degree in Dentistry from the University of Havana. He later specialized in Maxillofacial Surgery and became a professor of this specialty in the Department of Stomatology in Pinar del Río, affiliated with the University of Havana. While working at the Miguel Enrique Hospital in Havana, he was hired by the UNDP (United Nations Development Program) to train doctors in his specialty in the Republic of Mozambique. After completing his contract, he clandestinely traveled via South Africa to Portugal, Madrid, and finally arrived in Brazil, where he worked as a dental surgeon for nine years. His professional life was always crowned with success, but in 2002, due to the rise of President Lula da Silva to power in Brazil, he was dismissed from his position as a commissioner for the Prefeitura of Criciúma, Santa Catarina, for political reasons. This led him to travel to the United States, where, due to his advanced age, language barrier, and limited financial resources, he decided not to continue his professional career. Instead, he devoted himself to the noble task of assisting Cuban rafters arriving in the Florida Keys on precarious boats, hired for this purpose by the USCCB (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops). Through this humanitarian work, he was able to witness the hardships faced by Cuban citizens yearning for freedom. He is now retired and lives in the city of Hialeah, Miami-Dade, Florida. There, he dedicates his time to writing novels, some of which he began twenty years ago and remain unpublished. He hopes that their publication can serve as a testimony to a painful era that neither Cuba nor any other country deserves.
