La Vita di Sant'Alessio del poeta milanese Bonvesin da la Riva ci è conservata in forma completa in un solo codice della fine del Trecento, che oggi si trova nella Biblioteca Trivulziana (Triv 93). Gli editori anteriori, Gianfranco Contini e Adnan Gökçen, ritraducono il testo del manoscritto Trivulziano nella veste del più antico codice Berlinese, per avvicinarlo cos , in base ad una complessa ipotesi metrica e fonologica, alla presunta forma linguistica dell'originale duecentesco. Il risultato di una tale ricostruzione deve dirsi poco soddisfacente, almeno dal punto di vista storico-linguistico.

Il presente lavoro fornisce, per la prima volta, un'edizione interpretativa di questo importante testimone del lombardo antico. L'introduzione, il commento e l'indice completo delle voci e delle forme permettono la puntuale comprensione del testo e ne evidenziano l'interesse storico-linguistico. Al centro dell'attenzione sta qui, a differenza di molti lavori simili anche recenti, non l'ambito fonologico, ma la morfologia e la sintassi. In modo particolare viene sottolineata la stretta interdipendenza tra filologia testuale e sintassi storica. Le osservazioni sulla tecnica narrativa di Bonvesin e sulla sua prassi come traduttore, che aprono l'introduzione, ci portano per di più a riconoscere nell'autore della Vita di Sant'Alessio uno dei primi grandi narratori in un volgare italico, e ad attribuirgli cos , a scapito di un pregiudizio negativo profondamente ancorato, un ruolo non secondario nel panorama letterario dell'Italia medievale.
