Land is a basic input for agriculture and it occupies an important position among all the resources required for a modern economy. The way people handle and use land resource is decisive for their social and economic well-being as well as for the sustainability of land resources. The way and the extent to which the land is utilized set the pace of a country's economic development. The land use pattern in an area depends upon the physical, environmental factors and pressure of population on land. The rapid pace of economic development along with population growth, urbanization and industrialization exerted tremendous pressure on the limited natural resource base of a country. This poses a serious challenge to researchers and policy makers to strike a balance in the use of natural resources, keeping in mind the need for their conservation of sustainable development and food and livelihood security.
