Landscapes of the Heart is a collection of feelings, experiences, observations, and soul searching thoughts that are meant to evoke deep responses in the readers. The author, Mary R. Callahan, has used paper and pen as one would create visual images with easel and paintbrush. By sharing the landscape of her heart, she hopes to inspire the hidden poet in all her readers to "come out to play" with words. Her strong belief is that poetry can be a cathartic outlet for difficult feelings as well as a delightful way to express joy, ideas, and ideals. Free verse poetry gives the writer "poetic freedom" to express thoughts using whatever design or pattern he or she chooses. Mary R. Callahan is presently teaching language and literature classes at Bucks County Community College in Newtown, Pennsylvania. For most of her career, she has worked with students who have struggled to master reading, written expression, and general language skills due to a variety of learning disabilities. After studying English as her major in college, Mary attended Teachers College, Columbia University, in New York City, where she received her master's degree in special education. She recently completed a doctoral degree in special education at Arcadia University (PA). Her passion is to enhance the communication skills of students of all ages and, particularly, to inspire a deep appreciation of the joy and power of effective reading and writing in individuals with educational difficulties. For her, poetry has been a delightful unfolding of feelings, observations, reactions to world events, and ideas sparked by literature. She believes that there is a hidden poet in everyone. As Raold Dahl has stated (in The Minpins): Above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don't believe in magic will never find it.
