To evaluate the efficacy and applicability of Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP) in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), comparing it to transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). Both procedures were explained to patients with an indication for surgical treatment and they chose which procedure would be carried out, HoLEP or RTUp. All clinical data was collected at the hospital and a reassessment was carried out after 90 days. Results: 20 patients were operated on in the HoLEP group and 21 in the RTUp group. The preoperative peak urinary flow was 8ml/s in both groups. The preoperative symptom score was 22 in the HoLEP group and 20 in the RTUp group. Operative time was 85 minutes in the HoLEP group and 60 minutes in the RTUp group, p<0.05. Hospital stay was 47 hours for the Holep group and 48 hours for the RTUp group, p<0.05. In the 90-day evaluation, urinary flow increased to 21.5ml/s in the Holep group and to 20ml/s in the RTUp group and the median symptom score decreased to 3 in both groups. HoLEP is therefore a feasible technique and as effective as RTUp in the treatment of symptomatic BPH.
