In his last work, Hogg playfully adopts the role of preacher, casting meditations on life, religion and literature in the form of sermons on such subjects as "Young Women," "Soldiers," "Reason and Intellect," "Marriage," and "Reviewers." Witty and revealing, Lay Sermons gives insight into the mind of a 'justified sinner.'
