The book's main goal, apart from raising awareness, is to contribute towards reducing the environmental and health impact of artisanal mining in the affected areas so as secure a quality of environment adequate for good health and well-being of the surrounding mining communities.

Dr. Uriah Alexander Lar is a Professor of Applied and Environmental Geochemistry. The extent and depth of his work on the relationships between the distribution of chemical elements in the ecosystem and their associated human health risks, puts him in the forefront of Medical Geology research in Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa in general.
