In this book, the author begins with an overview of the role distance education has played in human resource development with particular reference to the training of teachers. It also discusses the rationale for the introduction of distance education in Ghana. He explains the concept distance education and its related concepts and emphasises the fact that in both the developed and developing countries, distance education has been used to increase access to education for a large number of people who would otherwise not have had the opportunity to benefit from formal education. He goes further to discuss learner support in distance education by highlighting the rationale and theoretical basis for providing learner support in distance education. Using this theoretical discussion, the author finally discusses how two of the public universities in Ghana, which run both residential and distance programmes, provide support for their distance learners.
