It is known that the opportunity to read produces higher levels of reading in Primary schools, especially at early grade level as teachers' linguistic knowledge and linguistic skills are critical in teaching initial Reading. Further, teachers' pedagogical practices, use of teaching and learning materials, innovativeness and greater devotion of greater portion of teaching learners to read are essential in initial Reading instructions. Learners should have foundational skills in the mother tongue through consistent practice in aspects like letter sounds and discrimination especially that of consonants. Lack of explicit awareness of the syllable poses difficulties in syllable identification and discrimination, distinction between sounds and letters.
