Since 1964, the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) has championed recruitment, retention, and graduation of minority medical students. Learning to Care, Learning to Lead: The History of the Student National Medical Association is the story of how SNMA came to prominence and continues to be the organization most directly responsible for supporting the numbers of cultural sensitive and clinically excellent physicians of color in the United States. Learning to Care, Learning to Lead tells this history by sharing the first person accounts of several of its prime-mover leaders, by discussing the growth and development of its mission and programming, and by using the trends in American culture as a background that parallels its activities.
