E. A. Wallis Budge war von 1894 bis 1924 der Verwalter ägyptischer und assyrischer Altertümer am Britischen Museum. Neben seiner Tätigkeit war er Gastprofessor am Christ's College, Professor an der Universität von Cambridge und Dozent für Hebräisch. Budge, der vor allem durch seine zahlreichen Fachübersetzungen bekannt wurde, stellte eine ansehnliche Sammlung koptischer, griechischer, arabischer, syrischer, äthiopischer und ägyptischer Manuskripte auf Papyrus zusammen. Er beteiligte sich außerdem an zahlreichen Ausgrabungen in Ägypten, Mesopotamien und dem Sudan.
