Douglas Weigent earned a B.A. in biology from Western Washington University and an M.Sc. and Ph.D. in microbiology and immunology from the University of Washington. His postdoctoral work was conducted at the University of Minnesota (Hormel Institute) and the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. His faculty work was conducted in the Departments of Physiology and Biophysics and Cell, Developmental and Integrative Biology at the University of Alabama in Birmingham, Alabama. He has published more than 70 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals and 30 book chapters. He has won several awards and presented his research at numerous scientific meetings. He retired as a professor in 2013 from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Although he has no formal educational qualifications in religious studies, he has had a strong personal interest for many years in numerous aspects of church life including Bible study. He has served the Lord as a deacon, growth group leader, usher, van driver, and yard keeper. He has served on numerous committees and visitation programs. He has both taught Sunday school and participated in jail ministry for almost 30 years. He lives in Birmingham, Alabama with his wife Diane to whom he has been married for 44 years. They have one daughter, Rachel, and one grandson named Christian.
