Antonio Skármeta nació en Antofagasta, Chile, en 1940. Estudió Filosofía en la Universidad de Chile y Literatura en la Universidad de Columbia, Nueva York. Enseñó en varias universidades chilenas y norteamericanas. Ha traducido clásicos norteamericanos, escrito y dirigido teatro y cine. Vivió quince años en Alemania, donde enseñó guion en la Academia para Cine y Televisión de Berlín. De su obra narrativa, traducida a más de treinta idiomas, cabe destacar los libros de cuentos El entusiasmo, Desnudo en el tejado, Tiro libre, El ciclista del San Cristóbal y Libertad de movimiento, así como las novelas Soñé que la nieve ardía, Ardiente paciencia (El cartero de Neruda), La velocidad del amor, La boda del poeta, La chica del trombón, El baile de la victoria, Un padre de película y Los días del arcoíris. Varias de sus obras se han llevado al cine, como El cartero de Neruda, también transformada en una ópera. Su trabajo literario ha sido reconocido con el Premio Nacional de Literatura, el Médicis de Francia, la Medalla Goethe de Alemania y los premios Grinzane Cavour, Elsa Morante y Ennio Flaiano de Italia, además de la Orden Marko Marulic de Croacia. También ha sido embajador de Chile en Alemania, ha escrito letras para música de varios compositores y ha sido creador y conductor de programas literarios.
