This study analyzes self-reported life satisfaction for individuals living in former Soviet Union countries both before and after the fall of communism. A number of variables are analyzed that impact the degree of change in life satisfaction. The data is interpreted in light of social psychological theories of personal and political freedom affecting personal happiness. Overall, the results do not indicate a general increase in life satisfaction following the fall of communism, and the establishment of democratic governments.

Dr. Townsend is a licensed Psychologist in private practice in Atlanta GA. He is a graduate of the Georgia School of Professional Psychology. His father collected the data analyzed in this work over many years of travel to former Soviet-bloc countries.
