This research addresses the issue of teaching/learning English in the Congolese education system. It examines the factors limiting the teaching/learning of this language at secondary level. The study shows that poorly qualified teachers, the use of inappropriate curricula, the lack of appropriate teaching materials and learners' lack of interest in learning foreign languages are among the factors penalising the teaching/learning of English in the Congo.
