How children born with severe hearing loss map phonological structures of their language with its orthography is under researched in relation to Indian languages. The research described in this monograph addresses the question of how to assess and train phonological and orthographic awareness in Telugu children with prelingual hearing impairment. A screening test of linguistic awareness and a set of fifty six lessons to enhance linguistic awareness in Telugu have been developed by the author. The contents of this book describe the research process and the efficacy of the material developed. It provides a detailed review of the literature, extensive references and sample lessons in linguistic awareness. Vasanta Duggirala received her training in audiology and speech pathology at the All India Institute of Speech and Hearing, Mysore, India, and the University of Memphis, Tennessee USA. She is currently professor at the Department of Linguistics, Osmania University, Hyderabad, India. Language disorders and multilingualism are her areas of research.
