Their gestation period is four months, but it can be as long as four or five months. When they give birth, the female hides her cub for at least six weeks. During the first months, cubs weigh just two to four pounds and are totally dependent on their mother. After they are born, they must stay with the mother for the rest of their lives. In addition, they sleep around 20 hours a day. Lions spend between 16 and 20 hours of the day sleeping. They are typically found lying on their backs, with their feet raised. They tend to sleep in trees. Lions are very affectionate towards their pride members. They rub their heads to show affection. Female lions give birth to two or three cubs at a time. During this time, they tend to raise the cubs together, and the cubs are nursed communally.
