This volume is the first in what will be a series of collections arising from different perspectives exploring the nature and place of the 'literary' in a cultural landscape dominated by the market on the one hand, and, on the other, critical positions sceptical of that category. It is an attempt to create a discussion, involving writers, academics, artists, translators, and publishers, that is at once non-academic, immediate, and intellectually rigorous.
