An account of a young woman maturing in the rapidly changing times of the 1930s in north east England. Bettina Dawson, the main character, grows in confidence and ability, adapting and creating opportunities which utilise her latent talents. Friendship, humour and the first stirrings of romantic love help Bettina through happy and difficult times. These same features, it is hoped, will engage and amuse the reader.

Autorenporträt
Now enjoying retirement, Hettie lives in the North East of England with her cat. Much of her time is devoted to her related passions of sewing, quilting and social history. In her working years she developed an interest in the barriers women faced in all aspects of life, particularly related to health, family and work. Hettie has been heartened to witness, in recent decades, the widening opportunities for women, although life/work balance continues to be tricky for most. In her own career she has helped to support families as a nurse, midwife and health visitor. Hettie's other books, Little Bronze Girl and Circlet of Gold are the second and third books of the trilogy. The importance of female friendships and good humour are illustrated throughout her stories. Finally, Hettie has appreciated the many kind comments from the readers of her books and hopes that Threads of Steel brings pleasure and enjoyment to all who read it.
