This book "Livelihoods in the River Basin" is a socio-economic livelihood study and policy analysis of the Koshi river Basin in Bihar (India). This study was executed aiming to accomplish main objectives of documenting detailed socio economic profile of people living in the Koshi river basin, analyse food security issues, understanding existing livelihoods opportunities, community coping practices, government interventions, emerging alternatives, future perspectives and policies which are relevant to Koshi basin, analyse national, state and local level development planning and policy impacts on upstream-downstream cooperation to reduce water related vulnerabilities, and develop good practice case studies to improve local water management and foster water centric upstream- downstream cooperation. The study draws information from literature review, household surveys, group discussion, key respondents information and in depth interviews. Field survey has been conducted across 11 districts of Bihar, which mainly come under the Kosi River basin area. The districts are namely Araria, Bhagalpur, Darbhanga, Katihar, Khagaria, Madhepura, Madhubani, Purnia, Saharsa, Samastipur, and Supaul.

Professor D M Diwakar is trained in Economics and has wide range of experiences of about four decades in social science research with national and international academic and administrative exposures in development studies and policy analysis routed in ground realities. The author is widely circulated through his academic journey and publications.
