This paper focuses on bringing out the importance of the local entrepreneurs in every economy, with focus on African economies. It emphasizes the importance of every economy and particularly African ones in using local entrepreneurs to address the needs of customers at the Bottom of the Pyramid (BOP). Although a lot of research has been undertaken on BOP, most of it has concentrated on opportunities offered by this segment of consumers. In order to add to existing research on this study, this paper takes a new dimension that will not only focus on the role of entrepreneurs in meeting the needs of the BOP but also as a driving force for economic transformation towards a more production oriented economy. Through proper analysis of countries such as India, which is an emerging market, the paper examines various strategies the country adopted to reach out to BOP markets.
