Edward Bellamy's Looking Backward belongs to the well-known tradition of utopian fiction. That is, fiction that attempts to portray an ideal human society from the author's point of view. In this vision the ideal society is one where the government remains a respected, powerful force of social order. Bellamy's vision was of a modern society free from social ills, competition, and protected and cared for by the state. It was in stark contrast to the excessive Gilded Age of his day. This may have been one of the reasons for the book's tremendous success. This edition includes a specially written Foreword by scholar Solomon James. Autorenporträt
Edward Bellamy (1850-1898) was born in Chicopee, Massachusetts, and also died there at the young age of 48 due to his lifelong illness of tubercolosis. Bellamy spent a short time in Europe after his studies before returning to the United States to enter a career in journalism, after an intial brief foray in law. In 1878 Bellamy turned his attention to a full time writing career in order to lessen demands upon his weakening health. In later life Bellamy actively engaged in political movements up until the time of his death. Azafran Books was established with a clear aim in mind - to make available a selection of classic books for today's contemporary readers. The books in our catalogue have been selected from a broad range of themes; such as philosophy (occidental & oriental), mysticism & magic, new thought, religion & spirituality, folktales, mythology, cult fiction, poetry, social commentary, and psychology. Yet they all have a common theme, or purpose - to stimulate our thinking and modes of perception. For this reason, they have been chosen to be re-published and re-presented to the modern reader. Azafran Books have been re-edited, formatted, and presented with new design work - they are NOT scanned copies with original errors. Our books have been carefully re-published to the highest of standards - by a team of dedicated real people - not an algorithm! Our aim at Azafran Books is to bring a range of stimulating books, many of them largely forgotten, to the attention of the reader today. In other words, to bring you 'Classic Books for a Contemporary World.'
