"Between the tractor's weight and earth's firmness, my brother Bill had just lost his life." Joseph's childhood ended that day. From a cheese farm in Holland, his family had immigrated to a mixed farm in Southern Ontario. He welcomed learning English and adapting to Canadian ways while valuing family tradition. Challenged as the youngest of a dozen, Joseph was wounded by Bill's hurtful and caring physical contact and by loneliness as a young teen in the seminary. In retirement Joseph healed by hiking across Europe, enjoying his grandchildren and writing these memoirs.
