This classic novel tells the story of Jim, a young British seaman haunted by a single act of cowardice after abandoning a ship in distress. Struggling to redeem himself, he seeks a fresh start in a remote trading post in the East Indies. There, he gains the respect of the locals and becomes their leader, but his past continues to cast a shadow over his new life. Conrad's narrative explores themes of honor, guilt, and the quest for personal redemption against the backdrop of colonial Southeast Asia.

Autorenporträt
Joseph Conrad (3 December 1857 - 3 August 1924) was a Polish-British writer regarded as one of the greatest novelists to write in the English language. Though he did not speak English fluently until his twenties, he came to be regarded a master prose stylist who brought a non-English sensibility into English literature. He wrote stories and novels, many with a nautical setting, that depict trials of the human spirit in the midst of what he saw as an impassive, inscrutable universe.
