No entanto, o livro só foi publicado em 1813, em razão do sucesso de sua primeira obra, intitulada Razão e Sensibilidade. Austen é considerada pioneira no enfoque do papel da mulher na sociedade em uma época em que as leis referentes à herança beneficiavam apenas os homens. À mulher restava o caminho do casamento. Jane Austen nasceu em Steventon, na zona rural da Inglaterra, em 1775. Era filha de um pastor da igreja anglicana, sendo que recebeu esmerada educação. Morreu em 1817, em Winchester.
