In her third book of poetry, Bianca Bowers explores the complexities of love and challenges the convention of monogamy. I think of Anthony and Cleopatra...epic, fated, tragic lovers that drank from love's cup but once. Only, I am no Cleopatra. I am Juliette, with her teenage desire; ambivalent about poison and war. Ruminating the one-love-fits-all theory, and toying with the concept of polyamory, the poetic voice travels from a starting point in which forbidden love poses a dilemma worthy of a Shakespearean-tragedy to a more indignant ending in which "our brains are slaveowners and love was never meant to be imprisoned."
