The MEROX process technology is the means of controlling mercaptans (RSH) on hydrocarbon streams from the gas through distillates. The presence of mercaptans in the petroleum product like LPG etc is highly undesirable due to their foul odor and high corrosive nature. Although there are several processes known for the removal of mercaptans from petroleum products, the most common practice is to oxidize the mercaptans present to less deleterious disulfide with air in the presence of a catalyst. Also through extraction, the mercaptans are removed. Lowering the total sulfur of the product. Extraction is generally used for lighter hydrocarbon streams such as LPG, etc because those mercaptans can easily be removed. This lowers the total sulfur and improves the odor of the product. The main goal of this project was to identify the hidden potentials of the process and what innovations can be done to optimize the process performance efficiently and economically.
