Mello's father is prominent Brazilian musician and singer Jair Rodrigues. Her brother, Jair Oliveira, is also an influential producer of modern Brazilian pop music and is a singer/songwriter in his own right. Mello's sound is a mix of Música Popular Brasileira, soul and hip hop genres, representative of the Brazilian "black music" scene. Her style has been likened to those of Paula Lima, Elza Soares.
