David Tomlinson (1917-2000) was a beloved British actor, best known worldwide for his iconic role as Mr. Banks in Disney's classic Mary Poppins (1964). Born in Henley-on-Thames, England, Tomlinson's early life was shaped by his adventurous spirit, which extended beyond acting. During World War II, he served as a Royal Air Force (RAF) pilot, surviving a crash landing and serving as a flying instructor, experiences that later became a notable part of his memoir.Tomlinson quickly gained recognition in films like the British comedy Quiet Wedding (1941) and Pimpernel Smith (1941), alongside his acting hero Leslie Howard. His career spanned more than five decades, including over fifty films, with memorable roles in The Love Bug (1968) and Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971), solidifying his legacy in family entertainment.Tomlinson also found success on the stage, with long-running performances in plays such as The Little Hut, where he shared the stage with Robert Morley, and Roger Moore served as his understudy. In his personal life, Tomlinson married Audrey Freeman in 1953, and the couple remained together for nearly 50 years, raising four sons. Despite facing personal tragedies earlier in life, including the tragic loss of his first wife, he built a fulfilling family life. He died in June 2000 at the age of 83.
