Sergej Lukianenko, 1968 in Kasachstan geboren, studierte in Alma-Ata Medizin, war als Psychiater tätig und lebt nun als freier Schriftsteller in Moskau. Er ist der populärste russische Fantasy- und Science Fiction-Autor der Gegenwart, seine Romane und Erzählungen wurden mehrfach preisgekrönt. Gemeinsam mit Regisseur Timur Bekmambetov schrieb Lukianenko auch das Drehbuch für die Verfilmung von "Wächter der Nacht".
