‘Heimat’ (home) is a term with extremely individual and therefore particularly multilayered connotations. In Germany, the term was quite controversial until just a few years ago, but in the meantime – in an era of globalization – has become nearly cult, and here and elsewhere, diverse questions are being asked: What is (a) home? Do we need one and, if yes, to what extent? Can we ‘make’ a home or does it have power over us? And why does specifically this term only exist in so few languages? Reason enough for the Draiflessen Collection to invite seven artists of different generations and from five countries, and for whom ‘home’ is a particular topic, to participate in the special exhibition on the theme ‘macht heimat!’ (make a home). In the first four weeks of the exhibition, the artists created works in open studios, which were then shown along with works that had already come into being through addressing this theme. These works were supplemented by further facets, presented in selected artist videos and pieces of music, while films, panel discussions and an interactive blog in which visitors were able to get involved were further highlights.
