Katinka lives in a rambling old apartment block in Massachusetts, and makes ends meet by writing stories for top-shelf men's magazines. She's a disappointment to her mother (who defines an eligible bachelor by the college he went to), and is all too frequently reminded of her professional (and personal) failings by her ex-husband (who used to be Katinka's professor). But it's coming up to Christmas and something wonderful - and unusual - is happening. Katinka is falling in love with the mailman - the gorgeous man who delivers her bills, her rejected manuscripts and the occasional paycheck. But is it love or is it just lust? And is he still involved with his ex? And whatever will her mother think?
