Phoebe O'Brien is glad to finally be starting middle school- for one main reason: she can try out for the school's equestrian team. What she didn't expect, however, was that making the team would drive a wedge between her and her BFF, Kallie. She also didn't realize being a member of a team might also require a sacrifice that could possibly jeopardize her own performance at their first equestrian team meet. Follow Phoebe and her horse, Dakota, as they try out for the equestrian team, participate in team practices, and compete at their first meet. Practice and run the same showmanship and horsemanship patterns as they do. Experience her encounters, both good and bad, with the other girls on the team. And share in her validation that hard work pays off; maybe it's even better than winning a blue ribbon!

Autorenporträt
Laurie Cerny is a lifelong horse owner. She had a successful show career as a teen- showing 4-H and open shows with a dun Quarter Horse gelding her father bought at a farm auction. She was raised under the motto "it's not the horse trailer, but what's in it" that matters. She returned to showing later in life and with a lot of dedication has been able to give several horses from former performance disciplines a new career in the show pen. Her dun Quarter Horse mare, Eilenas Sugar Habit (a.k.a. Lola), has won numerous class and circuit division championships on several buckskin horse association circuits. She has also earned two world championship titles at the International Buckskin Horse Association World Show. The author was a newspaper journalist for 25 years, writing for the Kalamazoo Gazette, Detroit News, and Chicago Tribune. She holds a Master's Degree in English and teaches English and American Literature at the college level. She and her partner, Dennis, live on a small horse farm they call Back Twenty Ranch in southwest Michigan.
