Management Change in Higher Education particularly in South Africa has been perplexing. The changing nature of academia, organisational structures and practices are reflective of the larger changes in the nature and purpose of these institutions. The discussion in this book considers the ways in which power relations are changing as a consequence of a new organisational design, new levels of management and new academic practices at a single institution. Pre and post 1999 institutional restructuring arrangements are considered as a lense through which these changes are considered. Through reading this book you will gain deeper insights into: (i) why managerialism is being implemented into higher education institutions in South Africa; (ii) the concequences of managerialism in a higher education context; and (iii) the specific nature of managerialism in the university context. The concept of "Contrived Collegial Managerialism" is offered as a conceptual framework through which to describe and examine these altered power relations from the lived experiences of both academics and academic managers within their changed contexts.
