The great number of initiatives provided by the nonprofit sector is currently being analyzed by different scholars who have identified a rich and articulate universe that requires managerial and organizational skills in order to achieve the best results in terms of social performance. The objective of this study is to provide a broad overview of nonprofit governance and to identify new perspectives for researchers and practitioners. The research consists of three chapters. The first provides an outline of what is intended by a nonprofit organization, highlighting its special features and the increasingly significant role it plays in the economy today. Organizational peculiarities, or the characteristic features of the NPO governance, have been tackled in the second chapter. In dealing with NPO governance outlook, an attempt has been made in the third chapter, after having highlighted the importance of intrinsic motivation in the activities of NPOs, to outline a model highlightingthe motivations of NPO governing bodies and their performance.

Rita Mura is Lecturer on Sport management at the University of Rome ¿Foro Italico¿. She received her Ph.D in Economics and Finance at University of Rome ¿Sapienzä with a dissertation on Nonprofit governance. She is the author of several papers on sport organizations.
