The County's capital is the town of Hola which has a population of 17,337. Other major towns include Madogo, Bura and Garsen. One of the important natural resources in the county is the River Tana, Kenya's largest river, which flows through the county as it drains into the Indian Ocean. The river also forms the Tana River Delta, a wetland that covers about 1,300 km2 and supports more than 100,000 inhabitants (Leauthaud et al., 2013)
