Manmohan Singh's life was a testament to perseverance, intellect, and service. Born on September 26, 1932, in the small village of Gah, located in what is now Pakistan, his journey began amidst the simplicity of rural life. However, destiny had far greater plans for him. In 1947, as the subcontinent endured the seismic upheaval of Partition, Singh and his family migrated to India, carrying with them the pain of displacement but also an unshakable resolve to build anew. From a young age, Singh displayed an exceptional aptitude for learning, which led him to the prestigious halls of the University of Oxford. There, he pursued a doctorate in economics, honing a sharp intellect that would later shape India's economic destiny. His academic brilliance soon found a global stage when he joined the United Nations in the late 1960s, serving as an economic expert from 1966 to 1969. In 1971, Singh's talents caught the attention of Lalit Narayan Mishra, who recruited him as an advisor in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. This marked the beginning of Singh's long and distinguished bureaucratic career. Over the next two decades, he became a trusted figure in shaping India's financial and economic policies, holding pivotal roles such as Chief Economic Advisor (1972-1976), Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (1982-1985), and head of the Planning Commission (1985-1987).
