The UNESCO 1972 Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage has been internationally well known as one of the most effective tools when regards to the conservation of cultural and natural properties worldwide, nonetheless, the outcomes and benefits of the inscription of a site to the World Heritage List is, to date, under-researched among experts. Applying the study case of the historical city of Mantova, property inscribed as part of the serial World Heritage Site of Mantova and Sabbioneta, inscribed in 2008, under criteria (ii) and (iii), the following research aims to analyse the process, implications and outcomes of the inscription of Mantova to the World Heritage List and subsequently the benefits for its conservation.
