This book analyzes and identifies the kinds of women characters' oppression in the modern American novel. The analysis is exercised in F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, Ernest Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises and Nella Larsen's Quicksand. These novels represent different kinds of oppression related to male violence, sexuality, production, culture, and racism. In these three novels, women are depicted as marginalized and oppressed by men.
