His first big break came when he joined Arsenal as a schoolboy in 1980, laying the foundation for a long and storied career. Keown made his professional debut in 1984 while on loan at Brighton & Hove Albion. A year later, in November 1985, he debuted for Arsenal, playing 22 league games that season. However, in 1986, when George Graham took over as Arsenal's manager, Keown was deemed surplus to requirements and was sold to Aston Villa. Despite his desire to stay, a contract disagreement led to his departure.
